House, now a public house. C16 or earlier jettied E crosswing, late C16
storeyed rebuild of hall range, internal chimney early C17, chimney at
NE corner C17 replacing dragon-post, mentioned as an inn in 1725, front
jetty underbuilt in brick and upper parts roughcast with date '1747' in
oval, windows and general renovation probably on sale in 1836 to
William Lucas brewer of Hitchin. Timber frame on stuccoed brick sill,
roughcast generally, dark weatherboarded W end, painted brick to front
on ground floor. Steep old red tile roofs. A T-plan building on street
front facing N. 2-storeys, 4 windows N front has 2- and 3-lights flush
casement windows with moulded surround and small panes. Very
steep-pitched gabled wing on E end with a tall half-octagonal brick
chimney on diagonal at NE corner in painted English-bond brickwork with
2 rebuilt diagonal square shafts on top. 6-panel fielded door next
crosswing up steps in heavy frame with flat hood on shaped brackets.
Wooden bracket and hanging signboard on crosswing. Large central chimney
a third from W end in front slope of roof. Single storey C18 brick and
timber frame weatherboarded hipped rear wing at SE. Interior shows
framework of an old 2-bays crosswing with clasped-purlins and adjacent
jettied faces on N and E and dragon-beam (cased) cut back for corner
chimney trimmed by diagonal stop-chamfered beam. Cavetto and cyma
elaborately moulded crossed floor beams in hall range are mason-mitred
and supported on the jowl of a post in rear wall. Axial cased beam in W
bay up one step. Cellar under crosswing and stair in rear angle and to S
of inserted internal chimney with very elaborately moulded fireplace
beam of C17 date. Holes for wattle and daub infill in framing of W wall
of crosswing exposed as screen in bar. 2 recesses in rear of fireplace
which is on the E side of the stack. Probably a 3-bays hall range with a
parlour at W beyond a 2-bays hall and the older E parlour wing used as a
service end to E of entrance. (Branch Johnson (1962)109). Cussans notes
that Robert Stanley Earl of Derby whose badge was the Eagle and Child,
was granted nearby Stagenhoe Manor in 1488 and it remained in his family
for only a century (Cussons (1874)II 128).
