Methodist church. 1906. Probably by George Baines & Son of London who
designed the Methodist Church at Breachwood Green in similar style and
materials in 1904. Red brick and slated steep roofs hipped W crosswing.
Terracotta architectural features to E front. A tall single-storey Arts
and Crafts building extending E-W, with taller crosswing at W projecting
to N and S with central gable on W. Decorative tile cresting with
finials. Tall tapered square finial with square overhanging cap to W end
of main roof. Shaped rafter ends overhang at eaves. 4 windows to each
sidewall each of 3-lights. Architecturally elaborate E front with
terracotta dressings. Gable parapet with flanking buttresses.
Semi-octagonal battlemented wide porch up 2 steps, itself with diagonal
buttresses flanking double-doors with glazed panels. Segmental arched
moulded head with luxuriant ogee finial rising above parapet. Flanking
buttresses have terracotta niches with segmental caps. Ogee in square
cinquefoil tracery windows in canted sides of porch. Tall 5-lights large
pointed window in E gable. Wider central light, Perp traceried head,
drips, and 3 slots in apex of gable. Stained glass glazing. Cross-gabled
tops and luxuriant finials to corner buttresses. Terracotta buff string
course and jambs to main door. Art Nouveau pierced lotus pattern vents
in terracotta between side windows. 3-lights traceried W end window with
segmental head and stained glass. (Kelly (1914)192-3).
