II GV

Barn and attached stable. Probably first half C18. Timber-framed with weatherboard
cladding on brick plinths; right wall of barn of red-brown brick in Flemish bond;
plain tile roofs. 3-bay barn with central cart-entry and lower 3-bay stable
(probably formerly a cowhouse) on left. Front of barn masked by C20 covered yard
which is not of special interest. Brick gable wall has eaves band and stepped gable
to raised verge with brick-on-edge coping. Stable has central stable door flanked
by slatted windows (most slats removed) Interior: barn: rear winnowing door
(apposite cart entry) boarded across. Frame has large scantling unjowelled posts
with chamfered arch braces to tie-beam, queen struts, clasped purlins, old rafters,
later plank ridge-piece; sole plate, mid-rails, replacement studs and diagonal
braces. Brick wall shows position of former braces. Stable has unjowelled posts
with long arched braces to wall-plates and tie-beams; queen struts; clasped purlins;
old rafters; at junction with barn, collared queen post truss. The left and front
walls have C19 studding and braces. The framing of the barn has similarities to that
of the barn at Praewood Farm (Hemel Hempstead Road, qv).
