Public House. Mid to late C17. Early to mid C19 brick casing and
alterations. Some original timber framing. Brick walls. Tiled roof. 5
bays, 3 windows, 2 storeys. Entrance between 2 left windows. Bracketed
C19 hood. Flanking ground floor C19 canted bays above which are 2 C19
sashes. To right a second entrance and a 3 light ground floor casement.
First floor weatherboarding with a single light. 2 straight joints in
front wall. Roof half hipped to left with C19 external stack. Cross
axial stack towards right on front pitch. Tilehanging on right gable
end. Weatherboarded lean-to addition to right with slate roof.
Contemporary continuous outshut to rear with 2 hipped projections,
larger is former staircase wing. Flat roofed 1 storey rear extension not
of special interest. Interior: some exposed timber, chamfered bearers,
inglenook with ovens. (Herts Archaeology, vol.6, 1978, p.78).
