Country House. 1668-79 with C20 extensions replacing earlier service
wings. For Sir Jeremiah Snow. Red brick. Stone dressings. Tiled roof.
Planned as 9 bay symmetrical rectangular house; only 5 bays built,
entrance and 4 bays to right. 2 storeys and attic. Projecting 2 storey
porch: stone entrance arch with pilasters, keyed arch, panels in
spandrels to cornice, broken pediment with arms of Snow in cartouche.
Inside porch: paired recesses with benches. Ceiled roof. C17 stained
glass over door. First floor window in porch: 2 light casement with
glazing bars and transom below top lights, rubbed brick flat arched
head. Porch left return has timber lintel over recess and ragged
brickwork where building linked to Tudor service wing. Right return: 2
lower recesses over plinth, that to left with a timber lintel and a
lower arched head, 4 centred head to right. 4 bays to right: windows as
in porch. Plinth. Continuous plat band. Deep boxed eaves. Hip to porch.
5 hipped dormers with leaded lights and moulded cornices. Right return
has 2 large external stacks with tall capped shafts in diagonally set
groups, 4 to front, 3 to rear. Tall casements between stacks, windows
towards front are blocked. Rear: similar triple shafted stack to rear of
main range to right. Double depth to 3 bays to left, twin gables to rear
with staircase gable at right angles on right return. Similar
fenestration, irregular because of stairs. Cambered heads to 2 attic
windows. Continuous plat band. 3 light dormer to right. 3 bay extension
to left of entrance replaces service wing. 1 storey and attic. Similar
windows and dormers. Triple shafted stack attached to cement rendered
left gable wall of C17 range. Interior: C17 screen with 2 arched
openings to Hall. C17 oak panelling below a series of good mid C16
Renaissance stone medallions with profile busts of Roman emperors carved
in low relief, brought from Sopwell Priory or Lee Hall. C17 parlour
chimneypiece, fruit and flower ornament carved in relief. Dog-leg stair
from rear of hall has square newels with carved heads and drops, barley
sugar balusters, moulded handrail. Upper floors: some panelling and
chimneypieces with C17 ornament painted on timber. The De Havilland
Mosquito was designed at Salisbury Hall. The house is completely
