Tower. c1815. For William Thompson, a banker of Hull. Gothick style.
White brick to exterior, red brick to interior, stone dressings. 2 storeys
in octagonal plan. Plinth. Blocked square-headed door with hoodmould under
uninscribed shield. Slit windows to remaining 7 sides. Moulded first-floor
band. First floor: 8 oblong windows under continuous hoodmould Band at
eaves level: crenellated parapet. This tower was built as an eye catcher to
Cottingham Castle (demolished), a Gothick house built for Thompson in the
early C19.
