2/49 East Lodge and screen
walls to Cave Castle
Lodge and screen walls to Cave Castle. Mid/late C19. White brick with
stone dressings, concealed roof. Central archway flanked by 3-storey,
single-bay towers. Plinth. 4-centred carriage arch with lower 4-centred
pedestrian arch to left under a sunk moulded panel bearing a coat of arms.
False machicolations, crenellated parapet. To right, an octagonal turret,
to left a square tower. The latter has a single-light, square-headed
blocked opening under a hoodmould to the ground floor; larger similar
opening to first floor, narrow oblong opening under a hoodmould to the
second floor. Dentilled cornice, crenellated parapet. Attached octagonal
turret to left of this tower: blank gunloop to first floor. Dentilled
cornice, crenellated parapet. Octagonal flue. Octagonal turret to right of
arch has openings obscured by ivy. Crenellated parapets. Crenellated
screen walls to right and to left terminate in square piers with cornices
capped with large stone bears: blank gun loops to faces of walls.
