Gate lodge. Probably 1752-60 by James Paine for Henry Pleydell Dawnay,
third Viscount Downe. Cl9-C20 addition to centre and alterations.
Rusticated limestone ashlar to original turrets, rendered brick to central
additions. Concrete tile roof. Plan: pair of octagonal turrets (originally
flanking entrance drive) with 2-room central addition. North-east front:
single storey, 3 sections. Central section with 2 blind round-headed panels
beneath hipped roof, flanked by turrets with plinths, chamfered rustication,
single windows to front with inserted C20 2-light casements beneath keyed
lintels, corbelled eaves, octagonal roofs; central octagonal stack to left
turret, later rendered side stack to right. Rear of central range has
semicircular opening with central glazed door and sidelights with glazing
bars. One of a pair of similar lodges, the other to the west demolished in
the 1960s.
