20/84 Market Cross


Market cross. Medieval origins, reset in 1806. Limestone ashlar. Circular
base of 4 steps, carrying square pedestal with plinth, panelled sides and
stepped cap containing leaded socket and iron spike for former cross shaft.
Pedestal bears small C20 plaque recording that John Wesley "preached from
these steps on many occasions". An illustration of c1858 shows the cross
