House and shop. 1826 by Woodhead and Hurst of Doncaster for Aire and Calder
Navigation, with late C19 shop front, C20 alterations. Brick in Flemish
bond, colour-washed. Welsh slate roof. 3 storeys, single first-floor
window. Shop front: stuccoed plinth containing segmental-headed basement
window, entrance to right with inappropriate inserted C20 door, shop window
to left (boarded over) with moulded sill and plain stuccoed apron, surround
with consoles bearing carved foliate and grapevine ornament, plain frieze
and moulded cornice (boarded over). First-floor sill band. Later C19
4-pane first-floor sash. C20 glazing to second-floor window in original
opening with sill. Both windows beneath rubbed-brick cambered arches.
Moulded corniced wooden gutter. Stack straddling ridge to left with plain
ashlar band and brick cornice. Shop disused at time of resurvey. Interior
not investigated. Part of the original planned port settlement beside Goole
Docks. Aire Street was the main commercial street. Included for group
value. Porteous J D, Canal Ports, 1976.
