14/50 Victoria Lock and Ouse

2 locks. Ouse Lock under construction 1835, completed 1838 with later
alterations by George Leather. Victoria Lock 1888. Ouse Lock of ashlar,
Victoria Lock lined in blue engineering brick with ashlar coping, both with
wrought-iron capstans and timber gates. Ouse Lock: approximately 105 x 15
metres. Rectangular with recesses to river end for gates. Rounded coping
above ashlar lining to chamber. Timber gates with iron straps. 3 original
capstans to east end and 4 to west end. Each capstan is approximately
1 metre in height and is a tapering fluted column with square base.
Specifically built for steamships and one of the finest examples of its
genre. Victoria Lock: approximately 180 x 15 metres. Rounded ashlar coping
above brick lining to chamber. Timber gates with iron straps. Plain
