14/69 Concrete water tower

Water tower. Completed 1927. By E J Silcock of Leeds for Goole Urban
District Council. Reinforced concrete. Circular with diameter of 27.5
metres. 44 metres in height. 8 stages. Central 7-stage tower enclosed
within open framework carrying drum-shaped tank surmounted by concrete
balustrade. Central tower has pilaster strips and bands between stages.
The outer framework has tall arched arcade of 24 closely set square piers
linked by bands of horizontal ties and with inner ties to central tower,
round arches and curved brackets supporting tank. Tank has plain plinth,
bracketed cornice and concrete balustrade with plain square-section
principals and bars between top and bottom rails. Capacity of 750,000
gallons. Plaque at foot of central tower on south side records date and
details of construction. Superceded the nearby brick tower of 1885 (qv).
Reputed to have been the largest such structure in Europe when built.
