House, now shops and flats. Late C18 with later alterations, including 2
left bays raised from 2 to 3 storeys, C19 and C20 shop fronts and
subdivision into flats. Pale orange-brown brick in Flemish bond with orange
brick and stone dressings. Welsh slate roof. Double-depth plan, originally
3-room north front with passage entrance to left of centre. 3 storeys, 6
bays. Orange brick quoins. Basket-arched passage archway to bay 2 with
double panelled doors in painted surround. To left (No 5), a shop front of
c1980. To right, an unsympathetically rendered section (No 3) with C20 door
and C19 4-pane sash with bracketed stone sill. Beyond to right a wide C19
shop front (No 1), altered in C20, with C20 glazed door and overlight, and
2-light window to left half; C20 glazed door and original C19 4-light window
to right half, all in wooden surround with pair of carved consoles, plain
frieze and bracketed cornice. First floor: first 2 bays have C19 12-pane
sashes in reveals with sills beneath channelled wedge lintels with fluted
keys, bays 3 and 4 have original 16-pane sashes, bays 5 and 6 have narrower
C19 plate-glass sashes (originally 12-pane) in original surrounds. 3-course
painted brick second-floor band. Second floor: first 2 bays have C19
unequal 9-pane sashes in reveals with sills beneath keyed and channelled
wedge lintels, bays 3 and 4 have original unequal 12-pane sashes, bays 5 and
6 have C19 plate-glass sashes in original surrounds. All windows to bays 3-
6 are in original flush wooden architraves and orange brick surrounds with
sills beneath painted rubbed-brick flat arches. Bracketed wooden eaves
cornice to bays 3-6; plain wooden eaves board and bracketed gutter to bays
1-2. Ridge stack to left of centre. C20 rebuilt end stack to right.
Stone-coped gable with shaped kneeler to left gable. Interior. No 3 has
section of moulded plaster cornice and ribbed ceiling surround with paterae
to ground-floor front. No 1 has original open-well staircase with ramped
corniced handrail, and plain balusters; not fully investigated. Adjoining
ranges to rear are not of special interest.
