Description

SE 82 SW TWIN RIVERS MAIN STREET
(south side)
Whitgift
1/42 Forecourt piers to
Whitgift Hall
14.2.67 (formerly listed under
Whitgift Parish)

GV II

Pair of forecourt piers. Early C18 style. Red brick with scored joints,
limestone ashlar dressings and finials. Square-section piers flanking north
forecourt to Whitgift Hall, approximately 25 metres apart. Both have
moulded plinth, corniced band, moulded cornice and flat cap with square
pedestal. West pier carries tall fluted urn with boldly gadrooned base and
cap; urn to the east pier broken off at time of resurvey (April 1987) and
lying nearby. Both piers have single ornate carved scrolled limestone
brackets on to later adjoining walls. Similarities in materials suggests
the piers may be contemporary with the wing walls added to Whitgift Hall
(qv) as part of later C18 - early C19 remodelling for the Stovin and Coulman
families. See Item 1/38 for additional historical details.
