Vicarage, now house. 1796 for Rev Tyson, with early C19 extension to east; remodelled
with new south front and west service wing added in 1835-7 by Rev Erskine Neal. C20
renovations. North front and east wing of pale yellow-brown brick in Flemish bond;
west wing and south front of red brick in double Flemish garden wall bond. Yellow
brick stacks. Welsh Slate roof. Double-depth plan: 2-room, central entrance-hall
north front with later single-room wings to left and right, and 2-room, central
entrance-hall south garden front. 2 storeys. North front: original symmetrical 3-bay
section with narrow central bay breaking forward. 4-panel door beneath moulded lintel,
plain overlight and stucco cambered arch, flanked by 12-pane sash to left and tripar-
tite sash to right with glazing bars. 12-pane first-floor sashes. Addition to left
has single ground-floor 12-pane sash. Addition to right has small 12-pane first-floor
sliding sash, coped parapet. All windows in flush wooden architraves with sills
beneath stucco cambered arches. Bracketed gutter. Double-span roof. Stone-coped
gables. Corniced ridge and end stacks. South front: main 3-bay section with lower
2-bay addition set back to right. Main section has central doorcase with pilasters
carrying entablature and hood, half-glazed panelled door in panelled reveal. 16-pane
sash to left beneath cambered brick arch. Ground floor canted bay window to right
with full-height 12-pane central sash and 8-pane side sashes beneath moulded cornice
and hipped roof. 12-pane first-floor sashes beneath cambered arches. Wing to right
has central ground floor French window with sidelights and glazing bars, and pair of
12-pane first-floor sashes, all beneath cambered arches. Bracketed gutter. Lean-to
set back to left has small single-pane casement. Interior. C19 single-flight stair-
case with wreathed grip handrail, turned balusters and newel post, profiled cheek-
pieces. Upper hall has moulded plaster cornice to ceiling with central circular roof
light with moulded surround and radial glazing bars, flanked by pair of smaller
circular loft hatches in similar moulded surrounds. Pilastered marble chimney-piece
and moulded plaster ceiling cornice to south-east drawing room; moulded cornice to
south-west room. Chimney-piece with paterae ornament and moulded ceiling cornice to
first floor south-west bedroom. Small early C19 chimney-piece with reeded frieze and
cornice to bedroom in east wing (so-called Bishop's Room). Moulded cornices to
central south and north-east first-floor rooms. C19 panelled doors to main rooms,
panelled shutters to south front. The style of the C19 stairlight, carpentry and
cornices is similar to that at The Old Vicarage, High Street, Luddington (qv) and
Eastoft Hall, Luddington Road, Eastoft (qv).
