BECK HILL (East Side)
Tyrwhitt Hall

21.9.66.

II* GV

Late medieval, extended and altered in C17, C18 and later. Pinkish brick with stepped and cogged eaves cornice, the older part concealing timber framed structure. Pantiled roofs. Brick chimneys, one stack at the junction having diagonal shafts. L-shaped. Two storeys, three irregular bays to each wing. Varied fenestration includes leaded casements, Yorkshire lights and a tripartite double-hung sash with glazing bars. Six-panel door, radial fanlight in simple pilastered surround.

Interior shows remains of medieval open hall with two different crown post trusses, one having a moulded arched tie beam resting on short corbelled shafts against wall posts, the other having deeper braces. Both have long arch braces from tie to crown post and short butt purlins. One original door remains and two other beamed rooms. One room has C17 wainscoting and another has a lively C18 plaster ceiling probably by Hull craftsmen.

The Church of St Peter the churchyard cross and wall and The Vicarage form a group
with Tyrwhitt Hall.
