6/36 Station House


Railway station and station-master's house, now house. 1849 for Manchester,
Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, with later extension and platform
canopy. Yellow brick front, red brick sides and rear, with ashlar
dressings. State roof. 'T-shaped on plan. Platform front: 1 and 2 storeys,
6 bays. 2-storey 2-bay central section with projecting bay containing
ticket office, flanked by one-bay single-storey wing to left containing
porter's lodge and 3-bay single-storey waiting room to right. Single-storey
extension set back to left. Quoins. Entrance in angle of ticket office has
pair of plain doors and radial fanlight beneath round-headed brick arch.
Entrances to wings have part-glazed doors and fanlights in round-headed
rusticated surrounds; radial fanlight to porter's lodge, plain fanlight to
waiting room. Front of ticket office has Venetian window with ashlar
mullions and moulded arch. Round-headed sash to left in rusticated surround
with cill on brackets. 2 similar windows to first floor. All windows are
sashes with glazing bars, (those to waiting room damaged and incomplete).
Plain ashlar eaves cornioe, interrupted by canopy, and returned across gable
ends of wings. Decorative bargeboard to projecting central section. Axial
and end stacks with ashlar cornices. Round-headed sash to right return in
rusticated surround. Rear, facing Station Yard: rendered projecting central
section has round-headed entrance with part-glazed door, radial fanlight and
side lights in ashlar surround; windows similar to front, with sashes to
waiting room and C20 casements elsewhere. Waiting room disused at time of
