Stables. 1820, by Sir Robert Smirke for Sir Robert Sheffield. Brick front
with sides and rear of coursed ironstone rubble with brick dressings; later
rendering, slate roof. Classical Revival style. Rectangular in plan; forms
west side of stable-yard. Single storey, 7 bays; symmetrical. Central
pedimented bay breaks forward, end bays recessed. Plinth, wooden hitching
rail at cill level and brick band linking bays at impost level. Central
segmental-arched entrance has double plank doors under radial fanlight with
circular ventilatfor in the gable above. 2 round-headed recesses to either
side with casements. End bays have plank doors under low segmental arches
with recessed rectangular panels above. Hipped roof. The left return facing
the Park has a gabled pedimented central section breaking forward with a band
interrupted at impost level by a round-headed recess containing a casement.
All casements have glazing bars. Interior: building still in use as stables,
contains C19 cast iron, brass and timber stall and tack room fittings.
