Railway station and station master's house, now house. 1849 for Manchester,
Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company, with later additions to left and
rear, and platform awning to right. Red brick with ashlar dressings. Slate
roof. Timber platform canopy. Tudor Revival style. L-shaped on plan, with
station offices to right and station master's house to left and rear.
Platform front: 2 storeys, 4 bays. 2 projecting gabled bays to left
containing Waiting Room and 2-bay range set back to right containing Booking
Office. Entrance to latter has recessed plank door with ornate strap hinges
in chamfered arched ashlar surround. 12-pane sash to right under ashlar
lintel, glazed wooden noticeboard to right end. Awning in angle, supported
on chamfered posts, has scalloped fringe and weather-boarded section to
right end with 4-pane casement. Entrance in angle of Waiting Room has
triangular-headed door under ashlar lintel. Two 3-light ashlar chamfered
mullion windows to left with 2-pane sashes and moulded ashlar hoods. Pair
of board doors under 4-pane overlight in single-storey extension to left.
First floor: 2-light mullioned window to left with 8-pane sashes, 8-pane
sash to right in similar ashlar surround, and station bell in frame to right
end. Stone-coped gables with ball finials and shaped kneelers. Pairs of
tall chamfered stacks to centre and left side. Right return, facing street,
has 6-pane ground floor casement in chamfered ashlar surround and later
first floor casement. Rear has door to right under plain lintel, windows
and gables similar to platform front.
