Pair of houses, originally 4 houses. Mid - late C18, probably for Carter
Estate, with early C19 carved arms for Duke of St Albans. Alterations of
c1950. Squared limestone with ashlar dressings; pantile roof. Plan: 4
rooms with single-room outshuts set back to left and right returns. 2
storeys, 5 bays; symmetrical. 3 central pedimented bays break forward, with
2 inserted C20 glazed doors to left and right and a pair of inserted C20
casements between; similar single casements to side bays. Flat arches to
original openings visible in centre bays. First-floor band. First floor: 4
inserted C20 casements and single original blind central opening with ashlar
sill beneath flat arch. Ashlar band and coved raking cornice to pediment.
Large painted carved ashlar arms of Duchy of St Albans in tympanum, with
shield and supporting scrolls carrying crested helm in recessed panel.
Hipped roof. Central stack and C20 rebuilt end stacks. Perhaps originally
built as almshouses. Drawings by C Nattes, 1795, Banks Collection, Lincoln
