Country house. Largely C17, reputedly begun c1603; early C18 south front
with later C18 fenestration; east front with late C18 - early C19 bay window
and external stack, and later C19 crenellations and re-fenestration; C18 and
early C19 interior alterations; north-east range of 1913 linking with C18
kitchen wing and outhouses. For Nelthorpe family. Red brick, with coursed
limestone rubble with brick dressings to kitchen wing and outhouses. Slate
and pantile roofs. Main ranges approximately square on plan, with courtyard
and kitchen wing extending to north. 3-room (now 2) south garden front with
projecting wings; 2-room east entrance front with projecting porch and north
wing set back to right; 2-room west entrance front with projecting
porch/stair-turret. Stables/coach-house (qv) adjoin to north-west. South
front: 2 storeys with attic, 2:3:2 bays, with 3-bay central range flanked by
2-bay gabled wings. Moulded plinth. Central entrance bay breaks forward
with former entrance containing 15-pane full-length sash in door-case of
c1720 with bollection-moulded eared architrave flanked by panelled pilasters
and carved acanthus brackets carrying moulded cornice. Recessed ground-
floor 12-pane sashes to central range, full-length 15-pane sashes to wings.
4-course first-floor band with cyma-reversa moulded lower course. 12-pane
first-floor sashes, that to centre with hollow-moulded architrave. Unequal
9-pane attic sashes to wings. All windows have projecting sills, rubbed-
brick flat arches; plain blind boxes to ground and first floor. Blocked
windows to inner return of wings. Bold wooden modillion eaves cornice.
Rainwater heads to angles with Nelthorpe arms in relief. Raised and tumbled
brick gables with shaped kneelers. Large external stacks to left and right
returns each have brick band at first-floor level, brick-coped gables with
shaped kneelers, square stack with offset and diamond-shafted corniced
chimneys, 4 to right, 2 to left. Right return forms east principal entrance
front: 2 storeys, 5 bays, with 3-storey gabled porch to right of centre
flanked by external stack to left and full-height canted bay to right; 2-
storey and attic single-bay gabled section, 2-storey 5-bay wing and 2-storey
gabled kitchen range set back to right, with stables and outbuildings
beyond. Moulded plinth. Porch has recessed 6-beaded-panel door beneath
dentilled cornice and 3-pane overlight, flanked by wrought-iron lamp bracket
and torch extinguisher; 6-pane first and second-floor sashes, blocked
openings to left and right returns. Main range has single 12-pane ground
and first-floor sashes flanking porch; tripartite sashes with glazing bars
to canted bay. 3-course brick first-floor band. Slightly-projecting 2-
storey gable-end to left with projecting gabled stack. Porch has raised
brick-coped gable, stepped and dentilled brick eaves cornice to returns.
Stone-coped crenellations to main range. Raised and tumbled brick gables.
Projecting stack to right return with first and second-floor bands, corniced
shaft. Range to right: gabled section on left has tripartite sashes with
glazing bars to each floor, first-floor band, raised and tumbled brick
gable; central section has 12-pane sashes beneath flat arches, first-floor
band, stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice; gabled section to right has
quoins, 2 unequal 15-pane ground-floor sashes, 2 unequal 9-pane first-floor
sashes in flush wooden architraves beneath rubbed-brick flat arches,
tumbled-in brick to gable. c1985 rebuilt clustered diamond-shafted stack to
left, square corniced axial stack to central section, similar c1985 rebuilt
stack to right. West front: 2 storeys, with 3-storey entrance porch/stair-
turret to left of centre incorporating small contemporary outshut to left,
flanked by projecting stacks. Porch: half-glazed door with margin lights
over 2 fielded-panels in architrave beneath flat arch, 6-pane first and
second-floor sashes in flush wooden architraves beneath flat arches, raised
and tumbled brick gables, stepped and cogged brick eaves cornice to porch
returns and main range. Stacks similar to east front, with first-floor
bands, offsets, 3 corniced diamond shafts to left, 2 to right. Interior.
West stairhall has fielded-panelled elliptical-arched recess with keyed
archivolt; fine early C18 open-well oak staircase with ramped and wreathed
handrail, painted carved acanthus-scroll brackets, alternating column-on-
bulb and twist-on-bulb balusters, one fluted and one plain newel column,
fielded-panel dado and moulded rail. Ground-floor south drawing room has
late C18 - early C19 details including reeded cornices, architraves,
chimney-piece and overmantel; carved marble fire-surround. Connecting east
room has fine early C18 open-well oak staircase with ramped handrail, carved
bracketed string, panelled newel posts, alternating column-on-vase and
twist-on-vase balusters with round knops, fielded panelling to underside and
to dado with moulded rail; moulded beam with ornate chamfer stops; reeded
cornices and architraves with lion's head motifs, reeded surround to
chimney-piece with dentilled cornice flanked by arched alcoves. Late C17
open-well back staircase to north-east side has closed-string, corniced
handrail, vase-on-bulb balusters with round knops. Interior not fully
