10/80 The Old Vicarage
Vicarage, now house. 1876-7 by Ewan Christian for the Crown Commissioners.
lied brick in English bond. Welsh slate roof. Approximately square on plan:
3-room principal south garden front, entrance hall to left return. South
front: 2 storeys, 3 bays; symmetrical. Chamfered plinth. Projecting
central gabled bay, canted to ground floor, has single plate-glass sash to
front beneath segmental arch, and narrow side sashes beneath lintels
supporting corbelled-out angles to square first-floor section. Side bays
have plate-glass sashes similar to centre. First floor: pair of 4-pane
sashes beneath segmental arches to central section, single similar sashes to
side bays. Moulded sills throughout. Stepped and dentilled brick eaves
cornice, with raking cornice forming broken pediment to central gable.
Hipped roof. Pair of large axial stacks with brick bands and corbelled
heads with brick coping and short cylindrical pots. Left return forms 2-bay
west entrance front: step to board door beneath plain overlight in pointed
double-chamfered brick arch with brick billet hoodmould, pair of narrow
plate-glass sashes to right; 4-pane first-floor sashes. Right return has
narrow central windows flanked by single sashes to each floor, one of 12
panes, the others 2 panes. Interior. Largely unaltered. Original details
include: open well staircase with turned balusters; chimneypieces to main
rooms with chamfered stone arches, polychrome tiles and wood surrounds;
panelled doors and window shutters, all with natural wood finish.
Contemporary with Christian's nearby Church of The Holy Trinity (qv).
