Church. C13 west tower and south arcade, C14 chancel, north aisle added and
church restored 1900-3 by Hodgson Fowler for Sir Tatton Skyes. Ashlar, lead
roofs. West tower, 6-bay aisled nave with south porch, 2-bay chancel with
north vestry. West tower of 3 stages: double chamfered plinth, clasping and
pilaster buttresses, roll moulded string to belfry stage. Lancet to ground
floor. Twin pointed belfry openings with mid-wall shaft, chamfered
imposts, and hood-moulds. Former corbel table below later parapet with
moulded coping. Nave: chamfered plinth, buttresses with offsets. Single
light pointed window to west, 3-light square headed window with hood-mould
to east, elsewhere two 2-light square-headed windows with hood-moulds, all
with early C20 tracery in Curvilinear style. C19 pointed south door with
mouldings and stopped hood-mould all in Perpendicular style. Raised coped
gables to south aisle. South porch has rebuilt arch of c1300 with attached
shafts with round bases and capitals. Raised coped gable with cross finial.
Chancel: double chamfered plinth, buttresses, and angle buttresses with
offsets and gablets. 2-light pointed windows with Curvilinear tracery,
including large mouchettes and stopped hood-moulds. Double-chamfered
trefoil-headed priest's door under stopped ogee hood-mould with crocketed
finial. East window: pointed of 3 lights with C19 tracery and stopped hood-
mould. Interior: double-chamfered tower arch on shaped corbels under traces
of 4 earlier roof scars. Remains of early C13 arcade include 2 round piers,
with waterholding bases, and west respond with similar attached shaft.
Elsewhere late C19 circular, octagonal, and quatrefoil piers to both north
and south arcades supporting double-chamfered pointed arches under
continuous hood-moulds with acanthus or human head stops. C15 chancel arch
with raised bases, responds with fillet and shallow roll mouldings, and
moulded imposts supporting pointed arch. Chancel has 3 trefoil-headed
sedilia with attached colonnettes with foliage capitals, crocketed ogee
gablets, and poppyhead finials, beneath hollow-chamfered dripstone.
Trefoil-headed piscina in ogee-headed opening with quarter-round moulding.
C12 tub font (from neighbouring church of Cottam, now demolished) with cable
moulding and arcading enclosing carved panels of Adam and Eve, the
martyrdoms of St Andrew and St Lawrence, The Tree, St Margaret and the
dragon, and a beast. Nearby stands a C12 lintel with the Paschal lamb and a
vine trail.
