Mid C18. Three storeys in painted brick with slate roof and moulded brick
eaves cornice of a type unusual in Beverley. Five windows, near flush frame
sashes, now without glazing bars, all with gauged arches over and mainly with
triple key blocks. Stone cills. Early C19 centre doorcase in wood with applied
Tuscan columns with entablature. Heavy 8-panel door without fanlight. Plinth.
The staircase is propably from Hotham House, and in any case is certainly re-
used, as it ends abruptly where it butts up against a more modern flight, open
string, plain newels with moulded caps, moulded handrail ridged up to newels
and curved on landing. Balusters of conventional turned type below but of
octagonal section tapering downwards above. Central baluster of the lower
flight is flat cut, but also tapers downwards (reminiscent of early C17 types);
stage repeated in the muntin to dado opposite. Moulded dado rail, with plain
munting otherwise. Two simpler stairs to second floor, closed strings, plain
newels, moulded handrails, balusters boxed in. One good C18 round-headed
window with glazing bars, plain imposts, moulded architrave, internally splayed
reveals, key block.
