Church. c1132 for the Prior of Kirkham Abbey, with later additions and
alterations, including C14 windows, C15 upper stage of tower and addition of
vestry, restorations and interior decoration of 1856-7 by J L Pearson and
G E Street for Sir Tatton Sykes, 5th Baronet of Sledmere. Sandstone ashlar
with grey slate roof. 3-stage west tower, 3-bay nave with south door and
2-bay chancel with single-bay north vestry. Tower has stepped and chamfered
plinth and clasping full-height pilaster buttresses with off-sets. To west
a round-arched entrance: studded plank door in surround of 4 orders, nook-
shafts have scallop capitals, the outer 3 arches have chevron moulding, the
inner arch is roll-moulded, all under decorative hoodmould, and with
patterned abaci and impost bands. Mass clock to right. Above are 3 eroded
figures. Above again a decorative sill band and round-arched window between
single nook-shafts with volute capitals, 2 arches of chevron moulding under
continuous hoodmould. Above a slit window and then, as all other sides,
2-light 4-centred arched belfry opening with Perpendicular tracery to head and
hoodmould. South side of tower has a round-arched window to first and
second stages. North side has a round-arched window to second stage.
Embattled parapets with stepped corner and central pinnacles. Nave:
chamfered- plinth and pilaster buttresses with off-sets to full-height
between each bay, to north and south sides. Corbel table. South side: entrance to
advanced gabled doorcase in first bay, a round-arched plank door within
surround of 4 orders of nook-shafts with scroll and scallop capitals.
Chevron moulding to first, third and fourth arches, otherwise roll-moulding.
Hoodmould and abaci decorated with rosettes. To outer corners of the
doorcase are single nook-shafts and abaci with nook-shafts above with
scallop capitals supporting copings. To left of doorcase a round-arched
window; similar window to second bay. To third bay a 3-light, pointed
window with Decorated tracery to head under hoodmould. North side has a
round-arched window to each bay. Chancel: chamfered plinth, pilaster
buttresses and corbel table. South side: round-arched windows to each bay
with incised zigag moulding to heads. North side: vestry; west side, has
round-arched entrance, a studded door, imposts support roll-moulded head.
North side of vestry has 2 round-arched windows. Otherwise chancel, north
side has round-arched window with zigzag moulding to head. East end:
plinth, clasping buttresses. Sill band supports 3 round-arched windows with
shafts with scallop capitals between; chevron moulding to heads. Continuous
hoodmould. Band. To gable a central round-arched window between 2 blind
oculi with brattished moulding. Interior. Decoration designed by Street.
Dado of Staffordshire tiles. Elaborate painted wall decoration to nave and
chancel with Biblical scenes and months of the year. Painted barrel vaulted
ceiling. Painting by Clayton and Bell. Norman tower arch heightened in C15
has single order of nook-shafts with scallop capitals, frieze, abaci and
double-chamfered pointed arch. To south of tower arch a Caernarvon-arched
doorway with fish-scale lintel. Chancel arch: single order of shafts with
scallop capitals, 2 orders of roll-moulding, then hoodmould with balls and
zigzag moulding. Above a 3-arched C19 arcade with scallop capitals, roll-
moulding and hoodmould. Round-arched piscina with nook-shafts. White
marble reredos by Street. C19 font and cover. Monuments: medieval knight
with crossed legs; medieval lady, her head under a canopy. Pevsner N,
