17/51 Waggoners' Memorial
War memorial. c1919. Designed and erected by Sir Mark Sykes, 6th Baronet,
and sculpted by Carlo Magnoni. Sandstone ashlar. Stepped octagonal base
has chamfered plinth, then 4 steps, the upper of which is chamfered,
supporting central drum carved with scenes of recruitment and war. 4
pillars spaced at regular intervals around carved with geometric and other
motifs,with animal heads and naturalistic motif to capitals. Inscribed
frieze over, patterned cornice with pinnacles above columns and central
stone spire. Inscription reads 'LT. COL: SIR MARK SYKES. BART: M.P.
DESIGNED THIS MONUMENT AND SET IT UP AS A REMEMBRANCE OF THE GALLANT
SERVICES RENDERED IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1919 / BY THE WAGGONER'S RESERVE A
CORPS OF 1000 DRIVERS RAISED BY HIM ON THE YORKSHIRE WOLD FARMS IN THE YEAR
