17/60 The Villa
House. Late C19 with later additions and alterations. By John Birch for
Sir Tatton Sykes, 5th Baronet. Red brick in Flemish bond with plain tile
roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays of which the centre breaks forward and is gabled,
and those to either side are set at 45? angle, also with ranges to rear.
Central-hallway plan. Plinth with moulded brick copings. 2 steps to
central entrance a board door with integral fanlight within 4-centred
surround of rubbed brick and under cavetto-moulded hood with label stops.
To right of this a casement window in ovolo-moulded surround with moulded
sill , under flat arch of gauged brick and with cavetto-moulded hood.
2-light cross windows in similar surrounds to each side of 5-sided canted bay
to right and similar 4-light window to left bay. First-floor bays slightly
jettied. The outer bays have ovolo-moulded first-floor band and the centre
a dentil band. First floor has 2- and 3-light, multi-paned casement windows
throughout with similar surrounds to ground floor, hoodmoulds to left and
centre bays are stepped. The left and centre bays are gabled with dentil-
moulded barge boards and drop finials. The right bay has hipped roof. Side
and rear stacks. Interior has oak staircase with Jacobethan-type
balustrade. 4-panel doors. Some original fireplaces.
