Description

GOUDHURST BEDGEBURY ROAD
TQ 73 NW (east side)

5/89 Gates, piers and quad-
rant walls adjacent to
Beresford Lodge
GV II
Gates, piers and quandrant walls. Circa 1840. Sandstone ashlar with wrought
iron. Central paired carriage gates, with dog rail, and with strapwork pilaster-
panels at the sides of each leaf, with bifurcated frieze and C scrolled over-
throw. The gates are set between piers about 7 feet high, with cornice and ball
finials, flanked by walls about 7 feet high, 10 feet in length, with vermiculated
stone panels, to a second set of identical piers. Quandrant walls project in
concave curve from here about 50 yards, the walls ramped down to about 5 feet,
with short iron rails punctuated by strapwork panels and supporting brackets, and
terminated with piers with cornice and ball finials, that to right (south) with
inset postbox inscribed 'VR' (ball finial missing). Attributed to Decimus Burton,
but more likely to be by Alexander Roos (see Beresford Lodge for details).
