Public house, now private house. 1801-1810. Stock brick with rendered base
with plain tiled roof. Double range in plan. Three storeys with cellar/
basement and parapet to roof with stacks to left and to right. Two glazing
bar sashes to each of 2nd and 1st floors, all with gauged heads in red brick.
Late C19 pub front on ground floor, with tripartite casement to left, and
large tripartite sash to right. Central half-glazed door with rectangular
fanlight with 2 moulded stops and recessed foot scraper to right. Basement
opening to right. The building was used as an officer's mess when the
cavalry barracks occupied Spencer Square, and was part of James Townley's
original development in this area. Marked on Collard and Hurst's 1821 plan
as The Duke of York. (See also Busson, Ramsgate, 108).
