railed Area
Terrace house. Circa 1816. Rendered with slate roof. Four storeys
and basement with parapet and stacks to left. Two sashes with moulded
surrounds on 2nd and 3rd floors. Two French windows on first floor in
lead-hooded verandah, with 2 moulded elliptical arches, and simple
Gothick traceried rails. Bow window to ground floor and basement with
2 sashes on ground floor with hood boxes, and glazing bar sash to left
and half-glazed door to right in basement, with sash to right below
stairs. Panelled door to right on ground floor with semi-circular
fanlight in moulded surround, with additional brackets to balcony, with
flight of 3 moulded marble steps. Spear head tails with urn-finial
principals. Interior: simple early C19 details, with marble surrounds
to painted iron moulded fireplaces. Simple turned baluster dog leg
stairs. The principal rooms on ground floor and first floor are
rendered elliptical by means of curved doors, preserving incised Greek
key ornament and fine brass key plates and escutcheons The Paragon was
originally laid out after 1802 as part of James Townley's redevelopment
of the old Cavalry Barracks site (see Spencer Square), and largely
completed by 1816. Nos. 4 to 11 inclusive indicate the original character
