Description

RAMSGATE VALE SQUARE
TR 3764 NE
(north side)
12/389 No. 13 Royal
Villa
GV II
House. 1839-40 for J.C. Eddels, built by William Saxby. Rendered with
slate roof. Two storeys, garret and basement, with cornice and parapet
with 3 pierced panels to double pitch roof. Two full height elliptical
bows, with segmentally headed recesses. Three glazing bar sashes on
first floor and 2 large margin light sashes on ground floor with
chamfered rebates. Central panelled door with rectangular fanlight.
Glazing bar sash to basement. Single storey extension to left with
margin light sash. James Creed Eddels was a hosier from Piccadilly,
London, who purchased and developed the land which became Vale Square
(from August 1839). He first lived at the pre-existing No. 5 Vale
Square (No. 5 Victoria Place), and moved into No. 13 (Royal Villa) in Summer
1840, by which time No. 51 (not now listable) and 52 (part of Vale House)
had been built. Vale Square was to be a square with 3 rows of 4 storey
houses and central garden, all to be built by William Saxby, the plan
amended 1846 to allow Saxby to build Christ Church (by G.G. Scott) on
the western side of the Vale. Eleven houses were built 1841-46, a
further 5 by March 1850, completing the development. (See Busson,
Ramsgate, 127-128).
