1/413 East Court
House, now school. 1889 by Ernest George and Peto for Sir Henry Wills
(Lord Winterstoke). Red brick with green Westmorland slate, hung on
walls and to roof. Double span and jettied main block with gabled side
wings. Main elevation (south, to sea). Two storeys and attic, with
double overhanging double jetty to right with large moulded stacks to
centre and to right, and to rear. Long range of attic casements on
brackets, with oriel to right on 1st floor, recessed verandah with wooden
rails to centre, and 2 storey bay to left, with Venetian window style
fenestration on ground floor, matched to right. Entrance front (right):
uncompromisingly the side elevation, with massive offset central stack
and gabled dormer. Gabled timbered porch with stained glass, balustraded
gates and half-glazed door. Garden front with 3 projecting gables, oriels
and ground floor verandah. Single storey service wings to north all
carried through with same materials and details. Wills was of the tobacco
family, and gave his name to the adjacent rock gardens (item 1/415 ff. )
and was adoptive uncle of Dame Janet Stancomb Wills, Mayor in 1923 and
behind most of the civic improvements throughout the 1920's (especially
