Now part of Fort Pitt Grammar School for Girls; originally a
barrack block to Fort Pitt (one of a system of Napoleonic forts
protecting the Medway towns) and subsequently served as a lunatic
asylum. Early C19. gault brick in English bond (rendered to
rear, S); Welsh slate hipped roof. 2 storeys. 2 large ridge
stacks. Coped parapet, dentil cornice and 1st floor sill band
extend around the whole building. Front (N): 5 window range, the
5 1st floor and 2 ground-floor windows with 24-pane sashes in
reveals under flat brick arches; later central porch. Gabled
single-storeyed projection to NW. Rear: symmetrical 5-window
range, windows as to front except ground floor, centre, which is
larger with late C20 glazing bars. Horned sashes and smaller
inserted windows to sides. Interior contains a dog-leg
staircase.
