1253 BARTHOLOMEW STREET
Nos 1 and 2 (Centuries)
[Formerly listed as No 2
(St Bartholomew's Hospital)]
TR 1634 NW 2/29 3.1.50.
St Bartholomew's Hospital was founded in 1336, moved to this site in 1685 and
was enlarged in 1811. The building is in 3 sections, all of 2 storeys. A north
wing of 3 window bays was added at the back of the East half in 1811. The East
half is built of ragstone wide jointed rubble, the West half of roughly squared
sandstone rubble, and the North wing of ashlar with flint galleting. The East
half retains its original pointed doorcase, but the doorcase in the West half
and all the poined windows date from 1811 and are similar to those in the North
wing. 2 sashes were inserted on both floors of the East wall of the East section
probably in the early C18. Their glazing bars are intact. Tiled roof, but
slate to North wing.
Nos 1 & 2 (Centuries) form a group with Nos 5 to 9 (odd) and Nos 13 to 17 (odd)
