3/59 The Dover Patrol
War Memorial

Memorial. 1919-21. Ashlar obelisk in railed surround. The surround, with
stepped base and concrete posts, contains 4 large anchors, 1 at each corner.
Monument: plinth to battered base, enclosing a form of simplified
aedicule on each side, with 2 steps to tall obelisk. Various inscriptions
on 4 sides record the laying of the first stone (Duke of Connaught, 1919)
the dedication (Prince of Wales, 1921), and the general inscription to the
Dover Patrol. Similar monuments were erected at Cap Blanc Nez, France and
New York Harbour.
