- Cottages


2 cottages, formerly a farmhouse. C17 and C18, possibly earlier origins, some
C19 and C20 modernisations. Timber-framed on coursed sandstone footings.
Most of the ground floor level is underbuilt with Flemish bond red brick with
burnt headers. Timber-frame above is clad with C19 red tile including bands
of scallop-shaped tiles; brick stack and chimneyshaft; peg-tile roof.

Plan: Only limited access was available at the time of this survey and
therefore this is not a complete description. However it appears to be a 2-
room plan farmhouse on a north east/south west axis with crosswings each end.
No 1 occupies the south west crosswing and faces south west. It has a 2-room
plan and the small kitchen to left appears to be a C20 extension. The main
room has a rear lateral stack which serves the fireplace here and another
behind in the main block. This crosswing is probably C18 and is a parlour
addition to the main block. The main block is probably a C17 2-room plan
farmhouse. It and the probably C19 north eastern crosswing belong to No 1.

Both cottages are 2 storeys with attics in the roofspace and lean-to outshots
against the north western side of the main block.

Exterior: The south west front (No 1) has a regular 3-window front of C20
uPVC casements with glazing bars. Front doorway is right of centre and
contains a circa 1970 plank door in a contemporary gabled porch. The roof is
half-hipped both ends. Only a small part of No 2 was seen and it contained
C19 and C20 casements, mostly without glazing bars.

Interior: Only No 1 was available for inspection at the time of this survey.
The ground floor has deeply-chamfered crossbeams and a brick fireplace with
chamfered oak lintel. Framing exposed at first floor level is of relatively
light scantling with straight tension braces. Common rafter truss roof. In
the roofspace the apex of the main block roof is exposed and is of heavier
