Description

HILDENBOROUGH STOCKS GREEN ROAD
TQ 54 NE
5/206 Old Barn Farmhouse
-
GV II

Farmhouse. Circa 1880. Ground floor red brick with blue brick patterns, the
first floor tile-hung with bands of ornamental tiles; peg-tile roof; brick
stacks.

Plan: A double depth, north-facing house, rectangular on plan, 2-rooms wide
with a central entrance in a projecting porch. The rear service rooms are in
an integral outshut.

Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. The exterior is very complete. The roof is
coped and gabled at ends, the end stacks have triple shafts with corbelled
coping. Symmetrical 3-bay front with a central gabled 2-storey porch, both
the gable and first floor jettied and coved, the first floor porch jetty
carved in curved brackets. The porch has a chamfered brick outer doorway with
a segmental arch and a wide C19 6-panel inner front door. A complete set of
original windows survives, all with iron casements with sexagonal panes. The
ground and first floor windows are transomed with 3 lights, 3-light windows to
the gabled attic dormers. The left end (east) stack is particularly fine: the
triple shafts are detached and the outer face of the stack is concealed by a
brick wall with stepped gables. The rear elevation has attic dormers and a
gabled rear centre projection, tile-hung.

Interior: Not inspected at time of survey (1988) but probably retains
original joinery and other features.
