Leacon Hall
House. 1708 for Hodges family. Red and blue chequered brickwork
with plain tiled roof. Two storeys and attic on plinth with wooden
moulded and modillioned eaves cornice to hipped roof with 3 pedimented
dormers with horizontally sliding glazing bar sashes, and stacks to
left and to right. Regular fenestration of 7 glazing bar sashes on
1st floor and 6 on ground floor, with thick glazing bars and rubbed
brick heads, the central 1st floor window especially frilly and
ornate. Central door of 6 moulded panels with rectangular fanlight
and open moulded segmental pediment on enriched consoles and moulded
panel pilasters. Interior: raised and fielded panelled rooms through-
out, with separate dado and infilling panelling, with simple moulded
fireplaces. Entrance hall with angle fireplace, and wide, keyed
segmental arch to staircase hall. This arch is painted with Unicorn
and Lion on the responds. Initials KH and date 1708 on key and
spandrels, and painted swags and enrichment (by the same craftsman
who executed the Royal Arms and prayer boards in the Church of St.
Matthew, Warehorne). Dog leg and landing staircase with turned
balusters on enriched scrolled tread ends with moulded hand rail.
