House and former stables and barn to Halton Hall, late C18th. Sandstone
rubble with slate roofs. House of 3 storeys with 3-bay north facade to
road and battlemented parapet. Ground floor has 2 sashed windows with
glazing bars and plain stone surrounds, in bays 2 and 3. 1st floor
windows are sashed with glazing bars with moulded architraves, the outer
2 having cyma cornices and the central one having a moulded pediment.
2nd floor windows have plain stone surrounds, the outer 2 being blank and
the central one being sashed with glazing bars. East wall of tower has a
sashed window with glazing bars in a plain stone surround on the 1st floor
and a 6-pane sash in a similar surround on the 2nd floor. 2-bay 2-storey
portion of the house extends to the south under the same roof as the
adjoining stables, having openings with plain reveals in the east wall,
the 3 window being sashed with glazing bars. The west wall of the tower
is blank except for one ground-floor window with plain reveals and one
1st floor window with a plain stone surround. Lean-to extensions at rear.
West wall of former stables has 2 wide entrances with modern doors, the
southern one having dressed jambs. Between them are 2 doors having plain
reveals. At the southern end is a wide segmental-arched entrance and a
door with plain reveals. At the south is a smaller 3-storey battlemented
tower. Its south wall has a window with plain reveals on the 1st floor
and an opening with a pointed arch on the 2nd floor, filled by stone
openings for a dovecote.
