House, said to have been built as a pilot station, early-to-mid C18th,
extended on east side in 1890s. Pebbledashed rubble with sandstone dressings
and pyramid roof of stone slate and slate. Original building one storey with
cellar, now with inserted floor,and of square plan with corner pilaster
strips and moulded eaves soffit. 3 sides have tall modern windows within the
original plain stone surrounds, now cutting across the inserted floor. The
4th window, on the east side, has been covered by the later extension. The
window surround on the west side has an outer rebate for a shutter. The
right-hand pilaster strip on the south side has been moved to the outer side
of the extension. Inside, a boarded timber ceiling remains, with timber
cornice and circular bolection-moulded border for a central compass rose, now
missing. Within the loft space a hole for a shaft can be seen at the apex of
the roof. Originally a wind vane was connected by a shaft to a pointer on the
ceiling which indicated the direction of the wind.
