SD 67 SW

5/183 Old School House
4-10-1967
II

House, formerly school, 1753. Sandstone rubble with slate roof. 2 storeys,
2 bays. Windows have stone surrounds with a slight chamfer. The door,
between bays, has a surround whose cyma moulding forms an ogee shape on
the lintel. Above is a plaque framed by pilasters and a cornice, supported
on brackets. It is inscribed: 'Johanni Farrer geno. et Johanni Fenwick
armigero qui ut adolescentia virtutis decus et literarum lumen accederent
huic scholae benefecerunt Hoc saxum Honoris et gratitudinis ergo Lubenter
poni curavit Parochia de Tunstall 1753.' Gable chimneys. At the right is a
lower addition whose front wall is blank except for a window with glazing
bars and plain reveals, set within a blocked doorway. Its lintel is a
re-used Medieval grave slab, incised with a sword and a cross within a
circle.
