SD 66 NW ROEBURNDALE OUTHWAITE

2/63 Stocks and Whipping Post approx.
4-10-1967 15 metres north-west of Outhwaite
Farmhouse

GV II

Stocks and whipping post, possibly c.1700. Sandstone. Stocks now built
into field wall and comprise 2 posts of square plan grooved on inner
sides. The upper board, presumably of wood, is now missing. The lower
part, slotted into the posts, has 4 semi-circular leg recesses. The
whipping post is roughly square on plan, with chamfered and stopped sides.
Below the top at the front is an iron ring. Tithe documents held at Hornby
Castle and dated 1721 record that William Edmondson of Outhwaite was then
constable of Roeburndale.
