Description

SD 66 NW ROEBURNDALE OUTHWAITE

2/67 North-western barn
-
GV II

Barn, c1800 with possible earlier remains. Sandstone rubble with stone
slate roof. West wall has wider shippon end projecting forwards at right,
the wide entrance to the left of this end under a canopy supported on a
projecting wall at the left. At the far right is a shippon door with plain
reveals. A short distance from the left-hand gable wall there are quoins
to a height of about 2 metres, suggesting that the barn is a rebuilding of
an earlier building on the site. The east wall has the shippon projecting
forwards at the left. This has a door with chamfered surround. Further
right is a threshing door with long-and-short jambs. Above it is a re-set
plaque inscribed: '1689 TE'. To the right under the eaves is a pitching
hole. Inside, two of the trusses are of oak with tie beams, high collars
and queen struts. The other trusses are of softwood with re-used
principals.
