House, 1693 with possible early C17th remains. Sandstone rubble with stone
slate roof. Unusual plan, with gable entry and with double depth achieved
by having a long front range and 3 short parallel roofs at rear. 3
storeys, with 2 moulded drip courses. Windows on ground and 1st floors
double-chamfered. At the left is a blocked window, then one of one light,
and 4 of 2 lights with sills lowered. At the left on the 1st floor there
is a blocked window. Further right there are 2 of 2 lights. A 3rd window,
to the right, has been altered and has blocked surrounds to left and
right. The 4 2nd floor windows have rebated and chamfered surrounds with
their central mullions removed. The present doorway, to the right of the
2nd 2-light window, is a C19th insertion and has a chamfered surround. The
gables have copings with kneelers and chimneys with weathered offsets and
moulded cornices. The original doorway is in the west gable wall. It has a
moulded surround with shaped lintel inscribed: '1693 WB IB'. The lintel is
flanked by detached inverted console brackets and has a broken segmental
pediment. Partly within the pediment is an attached ball finial with a
base inscribed: 'HB'. Above the doorway the lst and second floors each
have a cross window with flat-faced mullion and transom, cyma-moulded
surround, and cornice. To the left the west wall of the rear wing has a
3-light window to each floor, the upper one with stepped centre light.
Inside, the main room has a wide fireplace with moulded segmental arch. To
its right is a moulded doorway, now blocked, but originally entering the
lobby which formed the main entrance. The rear wall of this room has 2
chamfered doorways, one now blocked leading to the kitchen and one leading
to the stair hall. The rear wall of the kitchen has a wide fireplace,
somewhat altered. The open-well stair has a closed string and barley-sugar
balusters. Recorded by RCHM in May 1981. Their report suggests that the
main fireplace may have replaced a firehood and that the dividing wall
between the 2 front rooms was originally of timber.
