Farmhouse, now farmhouse and cottage. Probably early C17, altered or
extended of various dates (but development obscure). Coursed sandstone
rubble with quoins, stone slate roof. Linear plan now of approximately 4
bays, the right hand (east) half projecting slightly. Two storeys; near
the centre of each half is a doorway with plain surround (probably C18);
the left half has a double-chamfered mullion window on each floor to the
right (5 and 4 lights) and a C19 coupled window on each floor to the left;
the projecting right-hand half has large quoins at the right-hand end and
at a vertical joint to the left of the door, and larger masonry between
these up to 1st floor sill level (suggesting that this part of the front
wall is earlier than the rest); a chamfered flush mullion window on each
floor to the right of the door (both formerly 4 lights altered to make 2)
and in the portion to the left of the joint a C19 coupled window at ground
floor and an inserted window above. Gable chimneys (the left corbelled
from 1st floor) and a ridge chimney in line with the vertical joint of the
right hand half. Left gable wall has an inserted door near the rear, a
small chamfered window near the front and a blocked 3-light chamfered
mullion window above this. Rear wall of apparently continuous masonry has
inter alia a doorway (altered as window) with chamfered surround and humped
lintel in line with the front door of the right hand half, and various
irregularly spaced small windows (4 at ground floor and 2 above).
Interior: various features antedating alteration suggest the present 2nd
and 3rd bays were formerly respectively the housepart and firehood areas of
a 3-unit house with axial chimney stack: in the centre a lateral partition
with remains of a wide fireplace arch (the arched headed replaced by a beam
but semicircular relieving arch above this exposed at lst floor) flanked by
semicircular-headed doorways, all these chamfered on both sides; a
semicircular-headed doorway with moulded surround, at the front of the
partition wall of the 3rd band 4 bays suggesting a main entrance alongside
the fireplace (C.P. High Halstead, Worsthorne and Hurstwood Hall); 2
doorways in the partition to the 1st bay, both with moulded surrounds (the
front triangular headed and the rear segmental); and an axial beam in the
Ist bay with a grooved soffit and vacant mortices of a former service-end
parition.
