Description

SD 83 SE WORSTHORNE WITH HURSTWOOD
HURSTWOOD
3/54 Barn on west side of road,
immediately east of
Spenser House (formerly
listed by inclusion with
Spenser House)
1.4.1953
GV II

Barn, probably c.1600, part altered as cottage. Coursed squared sandstone,
stone slate roof. Aisled 4-bay plan; opposed wagon entrances to 3rd bay
(from south end) recessed between aisles; aisles on east side have inserted
doors and windows, that on the right has a chimney breaking through the
roof. South gable has a small window and some little breathers. Principal
feature of interest is interior, which is of post-and-truss construction,
with 4 frames (including north gable): posts with arch-bracing to tie-beams
and aisle-plates, king-post roof trusses with angle struts, 2 pairs of
purlins to the nave and 2 also to the aisles (stone and brick partitions
built into some parts). Good example of aisled barns found in this
District, but rare elsewhere in this county.
