Description

CLAUGHTON
SD 54 SW
Nos 1 and 2
8/57 Duckworth Hall
17-4-1967
- II
House, now divided into 2, late C17, altered C19. Sandstone rubble on
ground floor, with brick above. Lobby-entry plan. 2 storeys with 3 main
bays. 1st floor windows of 3 lights with timber mullions and glazing bars.
Ground-floor windows have modern frames; the left-hand bay has 2 windows.
Between the 1st and 2nd bays there are 2 small 1st floor windows. Between
the 3rd and 4th bays there is a small stair window. Between the 1st and
2nd bays is a gabled stone porch with carved bargeboards. Chimneys to left
of porch and on right-hand gable. Inside, the left-hand room, now a
separate house, has a chamfered and stopped firehood bressumer between 2
hearth posts. On the 1st floor are 2 original doors, one to a closet
beside the firehood. This gives access to a cupboard within the former
firehood area, with a seat, said to have been a priest's hide. The
right-hand house was not accessible at time of survey, but is said to have
a firehood bressumer, ovolo-moulded beams, and a cupboard in the rear wall
of the hearth with a carved door. The building will be described and
illustrated by Watson, R.C. and McClintock, M.E. in their forthcoming book
on houses in the Claughton area.
