8/68 Stable block north of Claughton
Stables, now partly converted into living accommodation, early C19.
Sandstone ashlar with tile roof. A symmetrical composition with a central
2-storey block with moulded pediment and 2 bands, and single-storey links
to lower pavilions with similar details. The central block has a tall
entrance with round arch. Above is a lunette with glazing bars. The
right-hand link is of 2 bays, with lunette windows. The pavilion is of one
bay with similar windows. The left-hand link is of 3 bays and has windows
with sills lowered. The left-hand pavilion is similar to the right-hand
one, but has a modern window on the ground floor. On the east side, facing
a yard, a lean-to canopy roof is carried on Tuscan columns. Claughton Hall
was rebuilt in the late 1950s.
