Description

SD 82 SE BACUP DOG PITS LANE

7/29 Old bridge c.10 metres
south-east of Dog Pits Lane
bridge over River Irwell
-
- II

Small bridge, date unknown but probably C18 or earlier. Single
low segmental arch of sandstone rubble, voussoirs of south-east
side now missing, linked to short retaining wall of south bank on west
side. Position suggests association with pre-turnpike route crossing
Irwell between Bacup Old Road to the west and Todmorden Old Road to
the east; now superseded by present bridge, and overgrown.
