SD 82 SW RAWTENSTALL GRANGE ROAD
Higher Constable Lee

6/197 Nos. 2 and 4 Higher Constable
- Lee

- II

Farmhouse, C17, altered, now 2 dwellings. Coursed sandstone rubble, stone
slate roof with gable chimneys. Two-bay end-baffle-entry plan with projecting
porch at right hand side. Two storeys; 2-storey gabled porch has a window on
each floor, the upper of 2 lights with a flush mullion, present door in right
return wall now covered by light wooden porch; to left, inserted door in
centre, and 2 altered windows on each floor. The interior is the principal
feature of interest, the 2nd bay containing a large inglenook fireplace with
bressummer beam and at right end a heck with witch-post, the head on the inner
face gouged with a diagonal cross: this is one of only 2 examples known in
the district (other is at Newhouse Farmhouse, Nos. 1 to 7 Springfield Road,
q.v.). Present farmhouse added at rear is not included in the item).
